Biotechnology Cluster
Biotechnology is an exciting field in Westchester and continues to be one of the county's most important economic sectors. There has been significant growth in several core industries (medical, chemical, biochemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnical), creating a total of about 8,000 jobs. That's one of the largest concentrations of biotech jobs in New York State.
Regeneron, Progenics, Taro Pharmaceuticals, Ciba Specialty Chemicals, Gradipore and Purdue Pharma are just a few of the name brand biotech firms located in Westchester.
The biotech cluster is complemented by the local presence of premiere medical and research institutions such as the Westchester Medical Center, New York Medical College and New York Presbyterian Hospital. These organizations offer the research resources and human capital that biotech companies need to operate and succeed.
A number of biotech sites are available in or planned for Westchester County. The largest currently available is the Landmark at Eastview in Tarrytown which houses a diverse group of companies specializing in chemical R&D, biotech and information technology. Formerly a Union Carbide R&D facility, the 275-acre complex now has 750,000-square-feet of space, and has plans to expand even further.
Westchester County is looking to develop a 300,000-square-foot biomedical complex on the campus of the Westchester Medical Center. New York Presbyterian Hospital is proposing a bio-medical research facility for its current site in White Plains, and the City of Yonkers is reconstructing the former Purdue Frederick facilities into a modern biotech center. All these projects are expected to help make Westchester into a top-notch center for medical research.
